Sunday May 12, 2019 is Mother’s Day across the world, and endearing spouses, children, family and friends will be celebrating mom’s everywhere. So to celebrate, we put together 12 ways you can celebrate mom and show her how much you love and appreciate her!
It’s just a fact that all moms love brunch. Now Rome doesn’t have the most flourishing brunch scene, but if you know where to go you can find a really good eggs benedict, avocado toast or mimosa. We wrote a post about our favorite places for brunch in Rome, like Marigold (Via Giovanni da Empoli, 37 – near the Piramid), Babington’s Tea Room located at the base of the Spanish Steps, or Bakery House at any of it’s locations in Rome.
Start the day with a physical activity, like running the Appian Way or around the Colosseum. We listed a few of our favorite running routes around Rome in this post, but feel free to explore your own routes. Head down to the river, or check out any one of the parks and get to know the city better!
Surprise mom with some fresh flowers from the local market. You’ll come across outdoor markets in many of Rome’s piazzas, like Campo de’ Fiori, Piazza San Cosimato, and Mercato Testaccio. You can find a more exhaustive list of markets from our post on a few of our favorites, but at any of these markets you’ll find a “flower guy” who will be happy to help you pick out something nice for mom.
Show mom how much you love and appreciate her with some good ol’ fashioned retail therapy. Naturally there are plenty of spots that are ripe for shopping. Via Condotti for the top international boutiques, La Rinascente on Via Tritone, and Cola di Rienzo near the Vatican is a major shopping street for locals and visitors alike. You can find some other places we recommend for shopping in a past post.
Rome’s Botanical Garden is tucked away in the Trastevere neighborhood and features thousands of exotic, rare, and indigenous species in 15 different collections. It’s a tranquil spot for a peaceful morning or afternoon to spend some quality time with mom. Read more about visiting the botanical garden in our post.
How about treating mom to a glass of something red, white or bubbly? Find respite in any of Rome’s wine bars (you can see a list of some of our favorites here), learn about them and even purchase a bottle or two to take home with you. Many of these places are great people-watching spots or offer a delicious aperitivo to relax before the night’s festivities.
Gelato is a very important part of any trip to Rome. Whether you prefer the simpler flavors like fior di panna or crema, or something more indulgent like dark chocolate, a self-led gelato-focused tour is a great way to celebrate anyone at any time! We detailed our favorite gelato spots on a map here, but go ahead and customize it according to your favorites!
If the weather is nice (which Rome in May is famous for) then a fabulous picnic is definitely in order! Pick up some meats, cheeses, olives, bread, and a bottle or two of wine and head to the park! Rome’s parks are full of history as they were generally former noble villas that were eventually turned over to the city. So make your way to Villa Borghese, Villa Pamphili, Villa Ada, or head south to the Laghetto dell’EUR.
Team time is one of life’s simple pleasures especially when you’re on vacation. Rome is full of tea rooms and hotels that offer a fabulous tea time experience, as we’ve outlined in our past post on tea time in Rome. So treat mom for an hour or two with a spot of tea and some finger foods at the St. Regis Rome (Via Vittorio Emanuele Orlando, 3), Hotel Eden (Via Ludovisi, 49), or the historic Babington’s Tea Rooms located at the base of the Spanish Steps.
Every mom loves a little pampering! Whether it’s a facial to get the day going or a full day of massages and treatments, Rome has something for everyone! Get the full scoop from our post on the best spas in Rome (including a few Rome Accommodation vacation rentals that have a spa in the home, like the Costaguti Experience). But for the shortlist, some of our favorite spas in Rome include Kami Spa (Via degli Avignonesi, 11/12 – near Piazza Barberini), AcquaMadre (Via di S. Ambrogio, 17), and the Caschera Spa (Largo Giovanni Montemartini, 20) near Termini station.
If there’s one thing that every local in Rome knows, it’s the best place to grab an aperitivo with a view! Rome has so many amazing rooftops and terraces that can make every day a celebration. We wrote a post about our favorite rooftops and terraces in Rome, but here are a few to get you started thinking about where to take mom:
If you’re really looking to splurge and show mom how much you love her, take her to one of Rome’s top dining establishments. We wrote a post about all of our favorite fine dining restaurants in Rome, but some of the highlights include:
