Multiple bedrooms for increased privacy? Check. Multiple baths for larger groups? Check. A spacious living room for relaxing and spending time together? Check. At the new Gianicolo apartment near Viale Trastevere, the main artery for the characteristic-by-day, fun-by-night neighborhood in Rome.
Trastevere, which translates to “beyond the Tiber” in Italian, was the countryside in ancient times where many wealthy Romans built summer villas to escape the hot, crowded city (Check out Villa Farnesina which features frescoes by Rafael, for example). During the Middle Ages, the urban planning created a network of winding, narrow streets, criss-crossing each other and occasionally opening up into large piazzas, like Piazza Santa Maria in Trastevere and Piazza San Cosimato. Today the narrow streets make for an incredibly whimsical experience, with small shops, restaurants, bars, and workshops making up the ground floor of vine-covered buildings. At night the neighborhood transforms with bustling nightlife, attracting local trasteverini, expats, and visiting students alike.
