If you visited the Colosseum a few decades ago, you probably remember just walking in, greeting a bunch of cats on the way in. Times have certainly changed since then with the lovely addition of aluminum fencing around the perimeter of the 2,000 year old arena and an entrance line that challenges the battle victory parades from back in the day. Last year a new director of the Colosseum Archaeological Park was announced, Alfonsina Russo – a seasoned archaeologist and former internal director for Rome’s cultural heritage – and she’s making big changes at Colosseo.

New 3D Projection Shows Return the Colosseum to its Original Use

Called Sangue e Arena the technologically immersive nighttime show recreates the opening celebrations that took place in the Colosseum in 80 AD. Wild animals, bloody gladiator fights, and the roar of the crowd let you experience the Colosseum like never before.

Sanque e Arena opened May 12 and continues through October 27, 2018. Shows last 30 minutes, and take place every Thursday, Friday and Saturday evening at 9:30pm, 10:30pm, and 11:30pm.

Tickets are €20 and may be purchased ahead of time on the Coopculture website.

Night Tours at the Colosseum

The sweet, warm air in Rome during the summer means staying out later is a must – and why not tour the Colosseum while you’re at it! Beat the day heat, and visit the underground level, ground level and first floor with tours offered in Italian and English.

Night tours are available starting May 14 until October 30, 2018. They are available from 8pm to midnight, with last entry at 10:40pm.

Tickets are €20 and may be purchased ahead of time on the Coopculture website.

Visit the Underground and Top Tier of the Colosseum

Last year news that the top ring of the Colosseum was open after decades of being closed spread worldwide. The top rings were the “cheap seats” in ancient Rome, where the poorest members of society watched the games from wooden seats (no longer existing, of course). But now the highest rings offer the most rewarding views of the Roman Forums nearby and the Roman skyline all around.
